Ossoff has drawn comparisons to former President Barack Obama because of his public speaking style, relatively young age, and perceived appeal among both progressive and moderate Democratic voters.
During his reelection victory speech, the senator strongly criticized Trump while calling for Americans to address the deeper divisions affecting the country.
«Together, we have reaffirmed that our task is not just to contain the evil of a president, but also to heal the wound behind it,» Ossoff said, according to The Independent en Español.
Born in Atlanta in 1987, Thomas Jonathan Ossoff became interested in politics at age 17 after learning about the work of civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis.
According to EFE, he interned for Lewis in 2004 and later joined the staff of Congressman Hank Johnson, working on foreign affairs and national security issues.
He studied culture and politics at Georgetown University and earned a master's degree in international political economy from the London School of Economics.
Before entering the Senate, Ossoff spent several years producing investigative documentaries covering corruption, human trafficking, organized crime, and war crimes.
He unsuccessfully ran for the US House of Representatives in 2017 before winning a Georgia Senate runoff election in January 2021.
As a senator, Ossoff has investigated alleged abuses in immigration detention facilities and supported legislative initiatives addressing public safety, child protection, and access to healthcare.
According to EFE, his priorities include lowering healthcare costs, strengthening oversight of immigration enforcement, and reversing tariffs that he argues have contributed to higher food prices.
He also supports immigration reform that would provide a pathway to legal status for certain undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for years and complied with the law.
The 2028 presidential election remains two years away, and neither major political party has formally selected its nominee.
According to EFE, other Democrats discussed as potential presidential contenders include former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have also been mentioned as possible candidates to succeed Trump.
