Waking up during the night to use the bathroom may seem like a normal consequence of aging, but frequent episodes could be a sign that deserves medical attention.

The need to wake up at night to urinate is medically known as nocturia. It can have various causes, ranging from everyday habits to underlying health conditions.

In men, one possible explanation is an enlarged prostate, according to Aditya K. Sharma, director of the Department of Urology, Uro-Oncology, and Kidney Transplant at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

The urologist warns against automatically assuming that repeatedly waking up to urinate is simply part of aging.

This growth is noncancerous. However, because of the prostate’s location, it can interfere with the normal flow of urine through the urethra.

What happens when the prostate becomes enlarged?

“When an enlarged prostate partially blocks the urethra, the bladder may have to work harder to empty. Over time, this can contribute to increased frequency and urgency of urination,” Sharma explained.

The urologist added that a man may wake up several times during the night even when he has not consumed excessive amounts of fluid.

Prostate-related nocturia generally does not occur in isolation. Paying attention to other urinary changes may help indicate when it is appropriate to consult a healthcare professional.

According to the specialist cited by the Hindustan Times, six urinary symptoms may accompany prostate enlargement:

Experiencing these symptoms does not automatically mean a person has benign prostatic hyperplasia, but the information can be valuable during a medical evaluation.

A specialist may ask how often the patient wakes during the night, how much urine is passed, whether the strength of the stream has changed, and whether symptoms also occur during the day.

Repeatedly waking up to urinate does not necessarily mean a man has an enlarged prostate. Numerous medical conditions and everyday habits can cause nocturia.

Possible causes mentioned by specialists include drinking excessive amounts of fluid in the afternoon or evening, consuming caffeine or alcohol, an overactive bladder, and urinary tract infections.

Diabetes, certain medications, and increased nighttime urine production may also contribute.

Sleep disorders can also be mistaken for urinary problems. Some people initially wake up for another reason and then decide to use the bathroom because they are already awake.

Obstructive sleep apnea has also been associated with nocturia because of physiological changes that can affect nighttime urine production.

This information can help a urologist determine whether the cause may involve the prostate, bladder, urinary tract, or another condition.

Depending on the individual case, a medical evaluation may include:

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the symptoms rather than focusing solely on preventing nighttime bathroom visits.

Specialists particularly recommend seeking medical attention when nighttime urination becomes frequent or occurs with a weak stream, difficulty starting urination, urgency, dribbling, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

In addition to disrupting rest, repeatedly waking during the night can fragment sleep and increase the risk of tripping and falling, particularly among older adults.
